A strong wind detracted from what would have otherwise been a perfect racing day, with dry temperate conditions for the 1711 finishers in this year’s Brass Monkey organised by York’s Knavesmire Harriers.
The race was won by Yared Haqus from Wallsend Harriers in 1.06.42 from Matthew Pierson from Holmfirth in 1.11.12 and unattached Paul Lockwood in 1.11.31. First lady was Felicity Milton of Woodford Green in 1.17.45 followed by Walls End Harriers’ Vick Hindson 1.22.46 and Melissa Neal of March in 1.24.19
The Fred Hughes 10 marks the start of the racing new year for many a runner. It’s course is considered by some to be undulating; “You`re either going up or going down”, is how one runner had described it, however they added that it’s also an “Attractive route - mainly rural (on roads) or semi-rural. Good friendly atmosphere, cheery marshals and the pick of St Alban's pubs for a post-race pick me up pint.”
Stub-tacular! was how one competitor described the 2009 Stubbington Green 10K. After the disappointment of having to cancel the event in 2010 because of the adverse weather conditions the race proved to be as popular as ever in 2011. Sport Systems are pleased to have been appointed to chip time the race for the second time.
