A strong wind detracted from what would have otherwise been a perfect racing day, with dry temperate conditions for the 1711 finishers in this year’s Brass Monkey organised by York’s Knavesmire Harriers.
The race was won by Yared Haqus from Wallsend Harriers in 1.06.42 from Matthew Pierson from Holmfirth in 1.11.12 and unattached Paul Lockwood in 1.11.31. First lady was Felicity Milton of Woodford Green in 1.17.45 followed by Walls End Harriers’ Vick Hindson 1.22.46 and Melissa Neal of March in 1.24.19

The Fred Hughes 10 marks the start of the racing new year for many a runner. It’s course is considered by some to be undulating; “You`re either going up or going down”, is how one runner had described it, however they added that it’s also an “Attractive route - mainly rural (on roads) or semi-rural. This race is a scenic and challenging 10 mile, 2-lap course comprising 75% road and 25% tracks & grass and is normally supported by around 700+ runners of all abilities. Much of the proceeds of the race go towards assisting local charities.
There are prizes for top 4 Male and top 3 Female finishers, plus generous Vets prizes. And of course a memento for all finishers. NEW this year are team prizes for top male and female teams. For UKA club members this will be done by Club. Non-affiliated competitors can choose their own team name and members.

An attractive anti clockwise UKA measured three lap course, covering 26 miles 385 yd's, through Luton and the immediate surrounding countryside on roads and pathways, controlled by police and marshals. Three drinks stations and one sponge station on each lap. Course marked with mile markers, timing clock at finish and split times at halfway. Relay stages will measure approximately 8.73 miles each. In conditions that were almost too perfect the 9th Leatherhead Fires Station 10K was won by Neil Aitken representing Clapham Chasers in 33.59. First lady was Paula Hartwell from Woking Green in 40.05. The magnificent Chasers were back in force this year with a remarkable 78 finishers from the total of 386. As ever the cakes were eagerly scoffed by hungry runners (and spectators alike!) and the race hopes that it will have broken £50,000 raised for charity over its nine years. Lovely point-to-point race from Cowley Recreation Ground, Uxbridge along the Grand Union Canal to Cassiobury Park, Watford. A lovely flat, scenic, unusual, multi-terrain course. Traffic-free apart from one minor road crossing. As this is a point-to-point race, you can choose to leave your car at the finish and use the bus to get to the start - your car will then be waiting for you when you've finished. Please note that you need to book your seat on the bus (£5) when you register. Places in this race are limited and last postal dates given as a guide only until the limit is reached. Starting and finishing on the Ridlins Wood Athletics Track this half marathon is run along the traffic free two lap course used in 2009. Half of the race will pass through the attractive Fairlands Valley and is relatively flat with small undulations. This will be the 30th Running Worksop Half Marathon organised by Worksop Harriers & AC. Often called the 'Scenic One' it starts from Worksop Town Centre and immediately heads out towards the National Trust's Clumber Park which is often at its autumnal best during the race. It is a gently undulating course that is surprisingly good for PBs (last mile or so is downhill).

The race takes place on closed roads with five water stations on the course and bottled water at the finish. The 30th running of the Cabbage Patch 10 lived up to its reputation of providing fast times as Jessica Coulson from Stockport Harriers set a new ladies course record of 52.53. Such was the quality of the field that second lady Edith Chelimo would also have set a new record had it not been for Jessica’s run ahead of her. In the men's race there was a very close finish between winner Paskar Owor in 48.58 and Mehreab Soloman in 49.00. Third place was taken by Sammy Kigen in 49.03. The 4th annual Rise 8K Undercliff Run for Women takes place at 10 am on Sunday 18th September 2011, starting and finishing in Saltdean near Brighton. The course is along the bottom of the iconic chalk cliffs with the cliffs on one side and the sea on the other, and runners must be over 15 on race day.
